About Us

Our walking tours are lead by experienced tour guides who give clear and precise accounts of historic events as you enjoy the walk. Tours take place daily throughout the year, except for Easter and Christmas holidays. There are two tours conducted daily starting at 10:00 and 14:00 respectively. The walk starts from Remembrance Acre car park opposite from Morris Isaacson School.

 

Local residents provide safety along the 8 kilometre route. Please note that there is a 3 kilometre uphill stretch from Dube to Orlando West, so you will need to be relatively fit to take the walk. However, transportation is always available for people with disabilities and health concerns.

 

For the tour, visitors will walk from Morris Isaacson School, where the protest march began, to Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world to house two Nobel Peace Prize recipients, where the protest march ended. It will then take a route through Orlando West to visit the Mandela Family Museum and Hector Pieterson Museum where the tour will end.

 

The Hector Pieterson Museum

At the Hector Pieterson Museum you will learn about the first child to be killed during 1976's student uprising, and you will learn about South Africa's struggle for democracy. Antoinette Sithole will start the Heritage Walking Tours, giving visitors a full description of events on that fateful day. Other veterans of the day will act as ambassadors at significant places along the walk to describe their experiences. The aim of the Walking Tours is to make visitors feel as though they were there on 16 June 1976. The tours end with the visitors enjoying a traditional South African lunch and engaging harmoniously with the locals.
